John Thomas Newton, MD (Tommy) is a family physician from Clinton, NC. He practiced full scope Family Medicine at Clinton Medical Clinic for 38 years, retiring from clinical practice in 2022. He has been active in Access Care, CCPN, and CCNC for many years.
Born and reared in Ahoskie, NC, Dr. Newton graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and Psychology in 1977, and graduated from UNC School of Medicine in 1981. He did his residency training in Family Medicine at Roanoke Memorial Hospitals (now Carilion) in Roanoke, Virginia.
Dr. Newton is married to his bride Annette for currently 48 years and counting. They have three grown children, and five grandchildren.
Dr. Newton has been active throughout his career in organized medicine and in his community. He has served as the founding Young Physicians Section chair of the NC Medical Society, multiple positions in the NC Academy of Family Physicians, including serving as President in 1995-1996, and many positions in Clinton, including serving as volunteer team physician for the Clinton Dark Horses for 35 years. He has been honored as Family Physician of the Year by the NCAFP, Citizen of the Year by the Clinton-Sampson Chamber of Commerce, and as a Top Five Finalist for Family Physician of the Year by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Newton is an Elder at Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he has served as Clerk of Session for several years.
In his spare time he enjoys being “Papa,” cycling, exercise walking, and occasional golfing.
