Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, person-centered form of talking to individuals to elicit and strengthen motivation for change. It is an effective, goal oriented, evidence-based approach. Using a collaborative communication style that improves understanding of the patient’s concerns, strengths and preferences, MI enhances efforts by the caregiver to engage, educate, and empower self-care management behaviors. The MI model offers professionals tools to generate change and to support our consumers in informed decision making: motivation is the key to successful engagement – engagement is the key to support education – education is the key to empowerment and commitment to successful outcomes.
Beginning in 2011, MI has been a key focus within CCNC – engaging, educating, and empowering the consumers we serve is a core value. Over the past year, all of the CCNC care managers have received extensive training, coaching, and technical assistance in each Network. In recognition of the importance of MI, a full day of MI training has been added to New Hire Orientation. Each network has identified MI Champions who serve as mentors for education and practice. The Champions have also created a Motivational Interviewing Resource Guide that reinforces the technique’s concepts. The long-term goal is to support MI at the individual practice level for both physicians and their staffs to further enhance communication and improve the overall health system.
